Have lots of old photos lying around the house? You find one every once in a while in a book or under the bed. Occasionally, you even find those old packets from the developing with a few pictures. Why not start organizing those photos on your way to making an unforgettable scrapbook?

Many people assume that the best way to organize photos is to put them in chronological order. However, if you have many photos that are unlabeled or dated, this may be difficult. Rather than dealing with this, try organizing by theme. There are countless organizational themes including: Christmases, Vacations, Family Reunions, Children's sports teams, an overseas trip, or a specific time period (college years). Try not to make them so broad that every photo will fit in, but also don't restrict them too much.

Making a scrapbook of each theme is a great idea because you can put them together fairly rapidly-each page doesn't have to be completely unique. In fact, you want to create unity between the pages. This will save money because you can use the same colors of background pages and mix and match accessories.

Do a 'cover page' for each year or event. If you choose a 'Sports' theme, have a section for soccer, one for basketball, etc. Keep the cover page bold and simple-maybe one photo and the date and location. Have a running continuity among the cover pages will bring a nice unity throughout the book.

Themed books are easy and enjoyable to look out and they show how children grow and styles change over the years. Even visitors to your home will enjoy flipping through albums like this, whereas a chronological album might bog them down.

To help yourself stay organized when it comes to all those photos, label a few envelopes with some possible themes. Whenever you develop film or print photos, try to divide them into the proper envelopes. That way whenever you are ready to start your next scrapbook, the photos you need will be ready to go…and you won't have to search under the bed or in any books!

A quick online search for "scrapbooking scissors" will give you a picture of how many different types of scissors and cutting tools there are for scrapbookers. Knowing the basics of these tools will help you know which scissors are the best choice for your needs. This can help you save time by not struggling with the wrong scissors, and save you money because you won't buy anything you won't use.

Exacto knife. Sure exacto knives aren't exactly scissors, but they can be helpful when it comes to setting up your layouts. Exacto knives are useful for cutting thicker materials with more precision than scissors and getting sharp corners for shapes and lettering. Just be sure you have a cutting pad to protect your surfaces.

Edgers. We've all seen pinking shears and know they can add a fun touch to your scrapbooks, but now edgers do so much more. You can make waves, scallops, and zigzags. There are even special edgers made just for corners.

Be careful not to go overboard though. While that 30 piece edging set might seem great at the time, it's a lot of money to spend when you can make patterns yourself by tracing. If you really must have all the different patterns, why not ask several friends to split the cost with you and share the scissors? This works even better if you live near each other or have scrapbooking parties.

Circle cutters. These are just what they sound like; they can cut a perfect circle every time. While many people prefer to just find something circular in their house and trace, these can save you time. Plus, depending on your cutting skills, you may have problems getting that circle looking just right. It may also be a challenge to find an object that's the size you're looking for. Circle cutters are an easy way to save you time and energy.

Trimmers. If you're like me, you can't cut a straight line to save your life. That's why you need to get some kind of trimmer with a straight edge on it. They're usually pretty easy to use, and once you get going, you'll be able to precisely cut a straight edge every time.

Scissors. With all the fancy products out there, you will still be glad you have your good old regular scissors. No matter what great products you have, nothing will ever replace them. You should be sure to buy some quality scissors to keep only for scrapbooking. Other uses could damage or dull the scissors and ruin your results. It's also best to buy specific scissors for paper and sewing scissors if you use fabrics. These will make sure you get the perfect cut every time.

If you aren't really sure what scissors you want or need, just start small. Start with several good pairs of scissors, and a trimmer. Work your way up as you learn more and gain skill.

I love to hang out on my couch and floor. I can play on my computer, listen to music, pretty much do anything all while being comfortable. The one thing I can't do is scrapbook. While you might think one of those lap desks is going to suffice, or that carpet is a perfect place to set up layouts, you will soon find that this is not going to work. You need to have a place set aside to store your supplies and do your work. It doesn't need to be big, but it should have a few essentials.

Scrapbooking requires a flat, hard, and preferably large surface. You should have a desk or a table that you can work at. This will give you room to spread all your stuff out, and give you a solid working surface. That way you can cut and trace precisely and glue accurately.

Another essential element of your scrapbooking area is shelves. This is even more important if your desk or table is small or used for other things. You need as much space as possible without all your materials getting in your way.

One thing many people don't consider when setting up their scrapbooking area is safety for your supplies. You may thing about putting your area in your basement or garage because there's extra room, but it's probably a better decision to move something else down there to make room for your new space.

If your scrapbooking stuff gets too cold or hot, too much sunlight, or gets wet, it can be ruined or will at least age faster. When you're picking a spot, consider temperature and humidity control, sun exposure, and whether or not there's a possibility of flooding. Moving stuff around in your house may take a bit of extra time, but it will preserve a lot of memories.

So now, you've got your area picked, bought your desk or table, gathered your storage stuff, and bought your scrapbooking supplies. You're ready put it together right?

Before you start adding stuff as fast as possible, plan first. You want to have the whole area ready and set up how you like it before you add your first supply. That will make it easier to rearrange if you decide something isn't going to work. It's a whole lot harder to make changes when it involved moving buttons, ribbon, and all your other supplies.

The last thing to consider in your scrapbooking area is inspiration. If you can decorate the walls or hang pictures up, do so. Add art pictures of your family, inspirational poems and saying, anything to get the juices flowing. Why not add a bulletin board to hang up layouts or a marker board to draw ideas?

These are just the basics you need for your area. Remember, that your scrapbooks are unique so the area you make them in should be too.

Acids are essential for our daily comfort, but when it comes to scrapbooking, there's really nothing worse. If you look at old scrapbooks or photo albums that your grandmother or even your mother made, you'll notice a distinct "aged" look to the photos. Most of that damage is not caused by time, it's caused by acids.

The best place to buy acid-free products is at a scrapbook store or scrapbook supply website, but that doesn't mean everything you find there is acid free. You need to learn to read labels. There are certain label codes that mean a product is safe. If the packaging is unclear, you can always ask the sales clerk or research the product online.

If you're unsure of a the acid level of paper, or just want to double check, you can test products on your own with a Ph pen. They're available at your local scrapbook store. They are also great if you're using products that aren't prepackaged for scrapbooking like greeting cards or wrapping paper. For just a small investment, you'll be saving precious memories.

PH pens have chemicals in them that change color when you expose them to an acid. Just write on a small piece of the material you want to test. If it stays the same color, it's safe. If the material changes color, don't use it.

If papers are too dark to see the color change, just rub the paper onto a white sheet until some of the color comes off. Then, test the white sheet with your pH pen. The acid is usually in the ink, not the paper, so this should give you an accurate result.

Everyone will tell you to use acid free paper, cardstock, and photo albums, but there are other hidden offenders that can do just as much damage to your memories if you don't buy acid-free products.

Glue. Using a pH pen isn't feasible for products like glue and other adhesives. You should learn the tell-tale signs that there's acid present in the product. The first and easiest is, of course, by reading the package, but that's not always helpful. A safe glue should not have a strong distinct smell and should always dry clear.

Page protectors. These are another big acid offender. While it may seem easier to just go buy regular protectors from the store, the very things you use to protect your photos may actually be destroying them.

Ink. Whether you're keeping track of your photos by writing on the back or just journaling and adding details on the pages of your scrapbook, you need to use acid-free ink pens.

Storage boxes. Whether you're using boxes to store pictures that haven't been used yet, or to store completed books, you should make sure that the boxes are acid free. Acidic boxes can do just as much damage as putting pictures on acidic paper.

While it may take a little extra time and money to find and buy acid-free products, the long term results will make it worth the effort.

Scrapbooking is a great way to spend your time while preserving your memories. If you're not careful, it's also an easy way to spend a lot of money. If you're thinking about starting scrapbooking, but are afraid you'll rack up too big a bill, or if you've been scrapbooking for a while and just want to cut costs, there are some great places to find products without spending a lot of cash.

Thrift stores. These are great places for all kinds of finds. You could find fabric, buttons, silk flowers, ribbon. The only thing limiting what you find is your own imagination and creativity. You may even get lucky and find scrapbooking supplies that someone didn't think they wanted to use or keep around.

Discount department stores. While stores like Wal-mart and Target are probably not the best place to find the products you're looking for in a high quality (paper, sheet protectors, adhesive), you can probably find great embellishments and decorations to spice up your layouts. Wrapping paper, ribbons, flowers, even discount greeting cards. Just like thrifts stores, the only limit to what you'll find there is you.

Fabric stores. When it comes to ribbons, bows, buttons, and even tools, you may be able to find what you're looking for cheaper at a fabric store (or fabric section of a department store) a whole lot cheaper than at a scrapbooking store. Plus, they have a variety to fit every style.

Your own home. Finding great stuff for your scrapbooks doesn't always mean going to the store. Old clothes, broken jewelry, spare buttons, old birthday cards, kids arts and crafts projects, even trash can be used in your scrapbooks.

Online. While you don't need to spend a lot of money on many things in scrapbooking, there are other materials you don't want to cut corners with. These include quality acid-free paper, glue, cardstock, and sheet protectors. Cutting corners in these areas will likely cause damage to your photos and leave you upset. The good news is, the internet is a great place to find quality products at a discount.

There are thousands of places to find scrapbooking tools and supplies online. It's not hard to find what you're looking for, the challenge is finding what you're looking for in good quality at a decent price. Do some research on scrapbooking websites and message boards. You'll find there are a lot of people who have done the legwork for you and are willing to help you out, you just have to ask.

The biggest concern with finding supplies online is that, when they show up, they might not be exactly what you're looking for. The best way to remedy this is to find items you want at your local store, and then check online for discount prices. That way you'll have no surprises when the box arrives.

With a little time and searching, you can get your scrapbooks started for pennies a day.

When you decide to get started in scrapbooking, it's very exciting. You research as much as you can, then head off to the scrapbook or other supply store and buy the tools and supplies you know you need. The problem starts when you get home and try to get started.

To be really successful and not get overwhelmed, you should take extra steps to get your stuff organized. In the long run, it will save you time, leaving you free to work, brainstorm, and of course, do more shopping.

The first thing every scrapbooker needs is shelves. You can organize your odds and ends into all kinds of containers, but it you don't have shelves to put them on, that stuff will still be all over your table or desk, taking up your work space. Make sure your shelves are sturdy so you don't end up trying to sort through a giant pile of paper scraps, buttons, and ribbons.

Next, you need storage containers to put on your shelves. You can find all sorts of different drawers and containers at your local scrapbooking store, craft store, fabric store, and even hardware store. If you don't do all your scrapbooking at home, the best way to organize is in containers than can be easily transported without spilling your supplies out everywhere.

If you're not looking to spend a fortune, why not use items you find around the house instead of expensive organizers and drawers you find at a craft store? You can use jars, small boxes, and even old baby bottles. You can also re-use old toolboxes, tackleboxes, or plastic sealing jewelry boxes (caboodles). Just as long as what you're using has enough space for separating different items and is easy to get into, there's really no rule about what you can and cannot use.

Files are a great way to organize paper, cardstock and anything else that's flat. The easiest to use are plastic expandable file organizers. They usually have a harder plastic on the outside to keep your stuff safe, several pockets to keep it organized, and a securing device like an elastic band to help hold everything inside.

If you go to scrapbooking meetings, or do your scrapbooking anywhere that isn't at home, you need to have a convenient way to transport your materials easily and safely. Remember, you don't need to take EVERYTHING with you when you go, just enough to work on a few layouts.

You will want to get a bag bigger than you think you need, because you'll inevitably remember something you haven't considered. Then you'll be grateful for the extra space. Another good idea is to label everything you take with you. That way your can easily find your cutting tools or ribbons without having to sort through the whole bag.

The most important thing for keeping your stuff organized is to pick a system and stick with it. You can organize by color sizes, themes, patterns; you can even use multiple schemes to organize. Someone you know might have a system that's great for them, but that doesn't mean it's great for you. All that really matters is that it's organized in a way you can easily find what you're looking for.

Children bring home papers almost everyday during their school years that their parents just can't bear to throw out. Why not save them in a scrapbook? They are fun to make and allow a great opportunity to spend quality time with your child.

Creativity is the key to everything. You will need scissors, construction paper, notebook, markers, and glue. You may want to also include pinking shears, laminating paper or clear contact paper, pictures, stickers, etc.

Decorate the outside of a three-ring notebook. Include stickers, pictures from a favorite magazine, or pictures of your child cut into fun designs, like a heart or star. Old scraps of wallpaper can also be used. Just cut out patterns and glue on.

If you have a school age child, be sure to preserve any papers you choose to keep, such as first test, awards, or artwork by laminating them. This can be done using laminating sheets or contact paper. Both protect from tears, while contact paper tends to be less expensive. You can either laminate the paper separately, or glue it on to pieces of construction paper. After you have laminated, punch three holes, and add into the binder as a page.

Pictures are a great addition. If you don't want to worry about keeping up with awards, just take a picture of your child holding the award. Cut the picture out and glue to construction paper. Consider allowing your child to write a description of the event, which will be a personalized addition. Add several pictures to one page, along with stickers, stamps, or cutouts to add more color.

Another unique idea is to add an autograph page. Take a class or team picture and have it copied onto a piece of paper. Have your child take it to school and have friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers sign the page.

Pocket pages are great for items you wish to keep but might not be large enough to add as a full page. Decorate the pocket with yarn, sequins and markers. Just use paper or poster board and some glue to make a few of these special pages.

When it comes to making your scrapbook, there are a lot of important things you need, photos, cardstock, scissors, ribbons, but perhaps the most important part is the thing that holds it all together, glue. Without glue, your scrapbook is just a pile of stuff. That's why it's important to pick the right kind.

There really is no best glue or even best type of glue to use when putting together your scrapbook. That's because we're all different and want different things when it comes to our books. Here are a few things to consider when choosing glue.

Effectiveness. Using any old glue is great if you want your scrapbook to look good now, but if you're looking for something to pass on to your children and grandchildren, you need an adhesive that's going to work.

While trial and error is great for some things, scrap booking really isn't one of those things. To avoid testing products on your precious memories, go online and do some research. Not on product web pages and reviews, but where it really counts. Ask around on message boards and chat rooms. Chances are, with a little searching, you'll find someone who's been scrap booking for a while and knows exactly what they're doing.

Safety. This is especially important if your children are helping you book together your scrapbooks. The problem with child-safe glue is that it often doesn't work very well. If you're worried about what your kids might get into, consider glues that aren't really glues at all: dry adhesives. Everyone's seen double sided tape, but there are so many other products around now that stick without all the mess of glue or the worry of having it around kids.

Acid levels. You probably already know that acid is enemy number one when it comes to your scrapbooks. In addition to paper and other materials, you should be sure to check your glue and other adhesives for acid content by reading labels and asking around. Some tell tale signs of acid are a strong smell and color that doesn't go away after the glue dries.

Permanence. Photo corners are a great option if you don't want your photos permanently attached to your albums. This is great for scanning photo's, changing them out if something happens and they age or get damaged, or even writing additional info on the pack of the photo that you don't want to put in the book (with photo-safe ink of course).

You may also want to consider having a permanent and temporary adhesive. Temporary adhesives are great for holding everything together before you decide exactly where you want them on your layout. Just remember that even after their gone, these temps can leave stick residue that can cause damage later, so be sure they're acid free as well.

Doing a little bit of research into finding the right glue will make sure that your photos stay in top shape and your scrapbooks stay stuck together.

When you finally make the decision to start making scrapbooks, you're very likely to go out and buy all the materials you think you need. This will probably lead to some buyer's remorse when you realize you have a bunch of stuff you don't need or can't afford.

It's easy to make a scrapbook on a budget with a lot of stuff you already have, you just need to know where to look. Here are some things you probably already have that can help get you started

Clothes. If you have clothes that are too worn out or stained to make good hand me downs or donations, why not add pieces of them to your layouts. Not only will you be saving money and making less trash, you'll also be reminded of great memories of your loved ones even if you didn't manage to get a picture.

Jewelry. Have an earring that's missing it's mate? A necklace with a broken clasp? What about a bracelet your child has outgrown? Instead of getting rid of them or just filling up space in a box, why not use them to add a little sparkle to your scrapbooks?

Gift decorations. Think about all the birthday, Christmas, baby, wedding, and any other gifts you've ever given or received. Now think about all the money you spend on wrapping paper, bags, bows, ribbons, and other decorations. Sometimes old decorations can be reused, but often they just get shoved in a closet or thrown away. Using them in your scrapbooks can make beautiful layouts and bring you back to the special occasion where you got them. Just watch out, some of these products can have high acid content.

Trash. Yes, some trash belongs in a trash can (or a compost heap), some might just make for a creative new layout. Next time you go to throw something away, take a good hard look at it first. It might just make a great background, border, or embellishment.

Souvenirs and Memories. Pictures aren't the only way to spark your memories. Add to pictures of your ski trip by using your lift ticket or trail map in your scrap book. If your son won the science fair, use his blue ribbon to add a special touch. Remember good times with friends by scrapping the tickets stubs from a movie you saw together or a matchbook from the restaurant you always eat at

Storage. You can not only use things you already have to put in your scrapbook, you can also store your supplies in items that may be taking up closet (or trash) space. Old jars and cups work great for storing ribbons and other embellishments. Did your husband get a new tackle box and hasn't gotten rid of the old one? All those little spaces are great for organizing buttons are even different adhesives.

Creativity. The only limit you have when you scrap is your own imagination. There are all kinds of things you can use in a scrapbook that aren't found at a scrapbooking store; you just need to teach yourself to recognize them.

So get up, look around your house, and start scrapping.

You have parties for birthdays, anniversaries, or even to check out the latest jewelry or other products. Why not get your friends together for a scrapbooking party? Besides having an excuse to have a party, there are some real benefits to having scrapbooking get-togethers with your friends.

New ideas. No matter how many sample layouts you look at or books you read, sometimes you just hit a wall and can't come up with anything else. Having a scrapbooking party with your friends will let you see their ideas, and they can see what you're working on and give you pointers. Sometimes a fresh perspective is enough to get you out of that slump and get you moving again.

New products. Let's face it, as much as you would love to spend all your time online or at store checking out or testing new products, you're just too busy. Having a scrapping get together is a great way to learn about, get opinions on, and even try out new supplies and tools. It not only saves you time, it can also save you money because you'll end up not buying a product that doesn't work well or that you just won't use.

Sharing supplies. There are a lot of useful tools for scrapbookers that can produce great results but often aren't worth the price for how often you use them. You can always trade tools with your friends, but it's a lot easier when you have time to get together. If you get together with three friends, that's four times the number of tools at your disposal. If 4 people are going to use it, it might make those novelty edgers, stamps, and punches worth the money.

Swapping extras. One of the biggest weaknesses in scrapbooking is buying more than you need. Stepping into a scrapbooking store is a great feeling, but it usually means you buy too much of something, or something that seems great at the time, but you never end up using. Plus, you always end up having extra scraps left over from layouts. If everyone brings their extras their not going to use, you can trade. They way you get new and different materials and you're reducing waste at the same time.

Meeting new people. If you know a few people who scrapbook, but want to expand your circle, encourage each person to bring someone who doesn't scrapbook to your next get together. You can share your assembled books, have them help you with layouts, and you might just convince them to start their own hobby.

Pure fun. Everyone needs time to unwind and relax with friends. You can just hang out while you're scrapbooking, or have a bit more organized fun with design challenges and scrappbooking related games. The bonus is, if you're all having fun, you'll probably get the creative juices flowing and come up with some fantastic new ideas.

So what are you waiting for? Call your friends and start arranging your next great gathering.

There are some great scrapbooking books on the market that can help you get started. You can also learn a lot from online articles and message boards, but words and pictures can only do so much. Trying to learn how to scrapbook from looking at pictures of completed layouts is like trying to learn to paint by going to an art gallery.

If you're serious about getting started in scrapbooking, there are some great DVDs out there to give you the boost you need. By actually watching someone put a layout together, you can learn subtle arts and techniques you need to be a successful scrapbooker.

The Art of Scrapbooking: If my husband can scrapbook…so can you! is a great example of exactly what scrapbooking DVDs should be about: technique. This instructional DVD is for beginners and teaches you how to use a variety of different products. It doesn't focus on creativity and layout design; that you can learn from books and articles. It teaches you the stuff you really need to see to understand and it makes it easy for people who are just getting started.

A DVD doesn't really need to be about scrapbooking specifically to help you perfect your layouts. An Altered Journey with Tim Holtz is an instructional video on various inking and stamping techniques that can be used in scrapbooking and other art projects. Even though the DVD's main focus isn't scrapbooking, it gives you some amazing techniques you can use and might just help you out with your non-scrapbooking related projects are well. And if you like it, he has several other instructional videos to continue your learning process.

If you really want to learn techniques, and DVDs seem to work for you, then you should look into buying a series. There are sets that have instructional DVDs on all sorts of topics. That way you're always learning and getting better. A great way to speed up the learning curve even more is by watching with your friends. You can have regular get-togethers to watch DVDs, practice techniques, and help each other out if someone isn't catching on as fast.

The best part of DVDs is that they're always there. They usually have clear titles and menus so you're not flipping a pile of books or searching the internet to get a refresher course on a technique. You just pop in the DVD and fast forward directly to what you're looking for.

You should remember that DVDs aren't going to make you a master scrapbooker. You need to continue to read books, research online, and constantly search for new ideas and inspiration. Although they can't make you and expert, DVDs can give you that extra push onto the right path.

Scrapbookers are always searching for the special 'extra' to make their scrapbook special. Try using a stencil in all different ways to make your scrapbook your best ever. When stenciling, make sure to draw very lightly on the page with a pencil, and erase the marks after completing to make your book crisp and clean.

A very creative stenciling idea is to create a puzzle page using a stencil. Create photo puzzle pages or cut paper shaped as puzzle pieces. This type of stencil can be purchased in the store or you can make one on your own. This is a cute idea to use for a children's scrapbook.

There are also journaling stencils available to place your journaling in a unique shape on your page. Even try writing a short poem in a traced shape. You can write a 'love poem' in the shape of a heart for an anniversary scrapbook. With a pencil, lightly trace out the shape and the lines to write on. When you have finished journaling, simply erase the pencil lines. Another option is to use a vanishing ink pen to draw the lines.

Stencils can be purchased in a variety of shapes and sizes. You can purchase hearts, ovals, vegetables, fruits, flowers, stars, and more. You can use the stencils to make a border or title for your page. Use a shaped stencil to cut out photo mats or journaling blocks. Reuse the stencils for other projects around your house or for decorating cards.

You can find a variety of letter stencils that can be used for making unique page titles. There are ABC tracers available that come in a variety of styles, fonts, and sizes. You can use the stencils to create unique titles, borders or embellishments.

Finally, stencils can be used to enhance your page layouts. They are great for lettering, creating shapes, making borders, framing photos, etc. Make sure to take care of your stencils by wiping them off after use and storing them properly so they do not bend or break.

When you're done with making a layout, what do you do with the scraps and pieces left over? Do you throw them away? Are they sitting in a drawer, file, or basket just taking up space? Why not use those scraps to add a unique special touch to your layouts? You'll not only save yourself money on supplies, you'll be reducing wate to help save the planet.

Punches are a great way to use scraps and add fun flair to your scrapbooks. Most scrapbook stores sell punches that turn your tidbits of paper and cardstock into tiny puppies, stars, rainbows and shapes of every kind. To cut the cost of punches, go shopping with your friends and buy punches you think you all can use. You can trade when you need them or use them at group get-togethers.

A lot of backgrounds are just a collections of pictures. You can make great embellishments and additions to layouts just by taking pictures from smaller background pieces. This is great if you tend to recycle materials like wrapping paper and greeting cards. While a whole group of flowers may make a great layout, a single flower from the same page can be just as, or more beautiful.

Mosaics are a fantastic way to reuse even the smallest scraps. You can be simple by making flowers or sunsets. If that's just too easy for you, you can find pictures you like and recreate them with scraps. To make the process more efficient, try organizing your scraps by color then size. This will make them easier to sort through for other uses too.

Scrapbooking stores sell all kinds of letters to add titles and substance to a layout. But why spend a lot of money on letters that may not be exactly what you're looking for? Extra pieces are great for making your own unique lettering. Solid colors make great letters, but you can also experiment with patterns. While if might take more time than buying precut letters or stamping them on, it will give your layout a special touch to make it stand out.

Did you know you can use leftover paper to make your own recycled paper? Just make your scraps very small, add a small amount of water and blend. Then, spread it out on silver foil, blot with paper towels, and allow it to dry. The end result is a thick, textured paper that can be for kid's crafts, or to add a special touch to your scrapbooks.

Do your kids have an interest in scrapbooking too? Giving them your leftover scraps is a great way to get them started without spending a lot of money on supplies. You can even find very inexpensive digital cameras just for kids so they can take their own pictures for their layouts. They'll have fun, create memories, and they might just give you some great ideas.

These are just a few of the many ways you can save money, save the environment, and even have some fun.

So, you're bought all your scrapbooking gear, set up a space, researched scrapbooking techniques and now you're ready to get started. Before you can start putting your first layout, you have to actually choose one. This seems like a simple task, but there are so many styles and options it's hard to know where to start. Here are some great ways to find possible layouts for your scrapbooks.

If you're looking for possible layouts, the first place you should look is online. There are hundreds of scrapbooking websites, many with free layouts and how to's on how to make them. Simple to complex, budget to expensive; there are ideas for every person and every occasion.

You can also find inspiration from scrapbooking layout sites and message boards. People can submit pictures of their layouts, and they do so on a regular basis. This means there's a constant supply of new layout ideas one pretty much every topic (and every budget) you can think of. Plus people are usually nice enough to give you tips and tricks about how they put it together.

Books are a great place to get started while choosing a layout. With just a little searching, you can find books with hundreds of sample layouts. But there's so much more you can gather from books than just layouts to copy. Many books help get you started on creating your own layouts by sharing scrapbooking philosophies and ways to spark your own imagination. You may even find inspiration from a book that has nothing to do with scrapbooking, like a beautiful picture, poem, or quote.

If you want more original ideas without pulling them straight from a book, why not have a get together with friends and family who scrapbook? You can get ideas from their work, or they can give you tips on a layout you're already working on. You never know, you may just get inspiration from a random conversation, story, or shared memory.

Sometimes the best layouts don't come from friends or web pages; they come from you. Scrapbooks are supposed to showcase your life and interests, so why shouldn't they come from your very own inspiration. If you feel like you can't seem to come up with ideas, just get out your supplies and start playing. Soon you'll find yourself with too many ideas for you to make.

Once you start working on layouts, be sure not to get carried away. You don't need to have every idea all slammed into a few layouts. You can start simple with a picture, journal, and a small embellishment, then work your way up as you buy more tools and gain more skill. Remember that scrapping is an art, and sometime simple is better.

Everyone wants to make their scrapbook unique…to put their own special touch on every page. Here are a few tricks you can use to capture every memory and to make your scrapbook your very own.

One of the great things about scrapbooks is that anything goes. You have the ability to put anything you want in. A good start to a unique scrapbook is to become a collector of your family and friends memorabilia. Now that doesn't mean memorabilia that we always think of. Be creative. Keep ticket stubs (movies, planes, museums), cards, cartoons, receipts, newspaper articles, pamphlets or brochures.

These things may seem plain or unexciting. But when paired with a few pictures, they can bring back some great memories, and they can act as a journal, without having to write anything. When you begin your collection of memorabilia, it is easy to become a 'pack-rat.' To avoid this, place one basket on a desk or bookshelf. Whenever you find something you want to keep, just through it in there. This will keep it organized, portable, and accessible. To keep the family involved, have your kids pick something that they want to keep and allow them to put it in the basket on their own.

Another tip to keeping your scrapbook unique is to re-think your picture-taking routine. We often only photograph big events, such as birthdays and holidays. You have few pictures lying around that capture day-to-day life. To make it easy, lay a few disposable cameras around the house. Taking a picture every day will become instinctive. When you flip through your scrapbook, these everyday shots will stand out. They will capture the most precious moments, which are sometimes the easiest to forget.

The final way to make your scrapbook unforgettable is to design each page as a whole. Scrapbook pages look best and are easiest to read when conceived as a whole. For each page or pair of pages facing each other, pick a simple color schemes and an overall title. Lay everything you want to use out before gluing it down to find a balance of images and captions.

When you get started in scrapbooking, it can start to seem very big. There are so many options to choose from for every decision involved in making a scrapbook. There are thousands of products, philosophies, and opinions. While all these options are what make your scrapbook so special and unique, they can also make getting started a daunting task. If you want to sort through all the mess and find your voice, you can find help from millions of people online who are just like you and who have been where you are right now.

Whether it's scrapbooking or any other sort of art, looking at the work of professionals can get me very down. Sure, you can find inspiration, but you can also find a lot of frustration because you're just not good enough to repeat their results. Online, you can see the layouts of thousands of scrapbookers from professionals and people who just started. This way you can get inspiration and support without feeling down about your own work.

In addition to seeing others' designs, you can also share your own with the world. Showing scrapbooks to your friends is great, but if they don't scrapbook themselves, they may not be able to give you helpful insights and opinions on your designs. Plus, you only have so many friends to help you out. If you find the right website, you can find thousands of people to give you honest and helpful opinions to get you on your way to successful scrapbooking.

Online, there's a good change you can find someone who's used a specific product and can give you an honest opinion. This is great for knowing which products to buy and saves you money by knowing what to avoid. I will also help protect your memories from faulty products that could destroy it years down the road.

Be careful about who you're getting your product information from. If you talk to someone regularly and they've voiced opinions on all kinds of products, you can likely trust what you say. The problem is that many product reviews are written by the manufacturers to boost sales, not by the consumers. Once you're comfortable with the internet, you should learn to spot these phonies pretty easily. Remember that if a product seems to good to be true, try your best to find a second opinion.

Probably the best part about meeting other scrapbookers online is that you can make friends with people who share the same interests as you. And once you get to talking, you'll probably find they share other interests as well. Whether they're from your neighborhood or across the globe, they can still become trusted lifelong friends.

You've looked over several magazines, websites and books about scrapbooking, and you feel like you're ready to go. However, in all these articles you've looked over, you realize there are a few words that you've heard your wedding photographer talk about…words that scare you a little bit…and cause you to doubt yourself with the thought, "I'm not a professional photographer…what have I gotten myself into?" These frightening words you will find aren't so frightening after all, and putting them into use will really spice up your scrapbook.

The first word is Cropping…which, simply put, is cutting off the boring, messy, or distracting parts of photos. For the most part, photos look best, and professional, when they have straight sides and clean edges, like a square or rectangle. Sometimes even a circle or ovals will work well. Another way to crop photos is to cut along the edges of an object or a person, like an outline, and remove the background altogether. If you're really feeling creative, cut a portion of an object out of a photo, leaving the rest of the photo intact. This will give you a 'jack-in-the-box' effect.

It is important to use the proper tools when cropping your pictures so you get crisp, 90 degree angles. This may mean buying something else when you head to the craft store. There are numerous small, inexpensive paper cutters to help you with this job. Try to avoid cutting photos with the fancy-edged scissors from your child's craft kit. Your best bet is to cut the photo with smooth edges and use the fancy scissors on a colored paper mat around the photo.

Speaking of mats…that brings up the second intimidating word…matting. Matting is basically giving your photo a background with a separate piece of paper. But, you may think, "Why waste the time doing that?" by having a narrow edge of colored paper around the outside edge of your photo, you can 'bring out' a certain color in photos. This can enhance the visual impact of the photo. Try using more than one color mat at a time. Don't slack off with matting, rather, be creative, and you will find a little cropping and a little matting can really go a long way with your scrapbook.

There's not much worse than looking through your completed scrapbook and finding that your book's layout is a mess. One page is crammed, the next is empty. Take the time to read the following ideas about scrapbook layouts to ensure that you are satisfied when you look through your finished product.

Every scrapbooker needs to know how to balance photos on scrapbook pages. When cropping photos, an easy way to achieve balance across a page layout is to crop two or more photos to the same size. A photo cropped to 3" x 4" will balance another cropped to 4" x 3".

A unique way to spice up your scrapbook's layout is to make a quilt page. To do this, measure your page and divide the width and length into thirds (and round the measurements down). Cut nine squares of paper to fit. Arrange the squares on the page three by three. Then, using a template or cutting tool, crop five photos into circles or hearts. Place a photo in the middle square and the four corner squares. Add pigma pen 'stitching' for a special touch.

You may think there is no order of scrapbooking. However, make sure to do your journaling before adhering any stickers. While there are a lot of nice embellishments available, this will prevent the temptation to over-use stickers to fill up any blank space.

Create a focus on your scrapbook page layout to give the viewer's eye somewhere to start looking on the page. If you are using more than three photos, the easiest way to create a focus is to use a distinctive title. For a classic effect, mat the title to match the photograph mats.

Love picking out that patterned paper in the craft store? There are a few rules to keep in mind when using patterned paper in your layout. Never use a background paper with a larger pattern than the smallest photographed head. Use a plain paper in a similar tone for your journal block. Don't be too concerned if you can't find the right photos to use with the patterned paper, which is often more tricky to match than plain paper.

There are some great ways to reuse your leftover scraps, but there may be only so much you can do with your own before all your books start to look alike. To spice up your scrapbooks and your friendships, have some fellow scrapbookers over to share and trade leftover scraps.

Scrap swapping with your friends is also a great way to keep yourself from overbuying supplies. Maybe you need a touch of pink in a layout but don't want to buy an entire package of cardstock or ribbon. Trading with your friends is an easy way to get that small touch you're looking for without a big pricetag.

Every good party needs games, right? Why not turn scrap swapping into a game? You can create challenges to put together layouts from various scraps that everyone brings with them. You can have everyone chip in money and get scrapping supplies for the winner or let them have first choice at what scraps they take home. Even if you don't want to use the specific layouts you come up with, you or one of your friends might come up with a great idea you can use.

You might worry that if you all share materials, your scrapbooks will all start to look alike. But if you're creative enough you can use the exact same things for totally different effects. It's like two different artist sharing the same paint.

Scrap swap meets are a great place to trade extras, but you can also use them as a place to share supplies. The price tag or some reusable items like edgers, stamps. and punches isn't so bad if you're all share what you buy.

So what if you really want to have a scrap swap meet, but you don't have any friends who scrapbook. Here are some great ways to meet people who share your passion and start swapping today.

Online. There are tons of great online forums on in the internet where you can meet people that share your passion. If you look hard enough, you're sure to find people in your area. If you're worried about the people you meet online, you can arrange to have your swap meets at a neutral location like a library or local coffee shop.

Scrapbooking stores. If you're apprehensive about meeting people on the internet, why not try your local scrapbooking store? You can ask employees if they know anyone who would be interested in scrapbooking swap meets or ask to post an add on a bulletin board or at a register. If that's too much effort, you can just strike up a conversation with a fellow scrapper while browsing the store.

Convert your current friends. If you can't find anyone who loves scrapbooking, convert people who haven't discovered this fantastic hobby. If a friend admires your scrapbooks, invite them to help you make some pages or offer to help them start their own. If you loan them supplies and advice, you're likely to get them hooked too.

Having scrap swapping parties can help you save money, come up with great ideas, and decrease the amount of trash you put into the environment, but these aren't the best reasons to have them. Scrapping parties are a great way to spend time with your friends, share memories, and just have a great time.

We've all looked through scrapbooks before and find us reading aloud to ourselves the captions and short journal entries that accompany the photos. Scrapbooking wouldn't be as meaningful and as captivating without those short, but sweet written memoirs. Here are a few ideas to help enhance your next scrapbook with journaling.

One of the hardest parts of journaling is finding something creative to write. Next time you are having trouble, give one of your friends the photo and have them create three to five questions about the picture that they want to know about. Tell them to be creative and avoid the who, what, and where questions. If your friends are having the same problems exchange pictures and help them out.

Another idea is to label photos. It may seem like a chore, but it is best to do it right. When doing any kind of scrapbook journaling, always use a pigma ink pen or other acid free product. Pigma ink is color fast, acid free, and fade resistant. Black pigma ink is color fast for up to 200 years. Don't fret too much about the state of your handwriting. As long as it is legible, you should consider your journaling a gift to the future.

A neglected tool when it comes to scrapbook journaling is a dictionary. How often do you skip a word because you don't know how to spell it or because it doesn't sound right? There is also scrapbook journaling software to aid in design and spell check.

To add a special touch to a scrapbook for grandparents, a babysitter or a teacher, allow children to journal in the scrapbook. Have them write something short. Their personal handwriting will make the book unique and priceless. Make sure you are supervising and help them predetermine what they will write to avoid any scribbles or mistakes.

A final journaling idea to use for vacation or traveling scrapbooks is to utilize postcards. Pick up a few scenic postcards at your destination spot. Jot a line or two down on the backside and mail it to yourself. This will give you a beautiful photo for your scrapbook and on the spot journaling.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to really chronicle family's thoughts and time together as a family. A great addition to the information you collect would be Thanksgiving poems. Lighthearted and fun, these poem selections give you the chance to choose sentiment as it is reflected in words. Sound cheesy? Thanksgiving poems offer a reflection in words that one will appreciate especially after the passage of time. Words have the uncanny ability to bring one back to a thought sequence or state of mind that they were in when originally those words were first spoken or read.

Holidays are a time when traditions are held closely, and sentiment is dear. When composing a family scrapbook, you will find that much of the content is made up of holiday content. Christmas time is most likely the season in which you will base much of your winter holiday themes around. But what about Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to really chronicle family's thoughts and time together as a family. A great addition to the information you collect would be Thanksgiving poems. Lighthearted and fun, these poem selections give you the chance to choose sentiment as it is reflected in words. Sound cheesy? Thanksgiving poems offer a reflection in words that one will appreciate especially after the passage of time. Words have the uncanny ability to bring one back to a thought sequence or state of mind that they were in when originally those words were first spoken or read.

Where to find Thanksgiving poems? You can find a great amount of useable verse online. Prayers that are repeated often, songs that are sung, and children's books are terrific places to begin the search for Thanksgiving poems. Have a child sit down and create a 'Things I am Thankful For" poem. These are sure hits and are often points of much discussion and debate among the children in years to come.

One of the best Thanksgiving poem layouts I have seen was a simple poem, written by a six-year old boy on parchment paper. At the bottom of the page, his mother and all of their family members signed and dated it. This was an excellent preservation of the little boy's thoughts and feelings as well as a very unique presentation of them.

Thanksgiving poems make for great inclusions in party themed scrapbooks as well. If your office or workplace celebrates Thanksgiving and you intend on including pictures and materials from the party, a fun way to involve your co-workers and employees would be to bring a sheet of plain notebook paper and ask each of them to compose one line of the poem, each trying to rhyme with the last, explaining a piece or portion of their life for which they are the most thankful. If you exercise a little bit of forethought and mention this to them prior to the party, you could even have them bring in an item relating to the object of their thankfulness and find a way to fit that into the layout as well. Be sure that they understand that they will be unable to receive these items back and that they shouldn't be too personal in nature. That being said, you will find yourself amazed at the items of which your fellow co-workers will provide!

A cute and smart wedding theme using your Thanksgiving poems would be to ask guests and family before the wedding to compose short verses about the couple-to-be. Furnish them with small tidbits of ivory paper or parchment and pens and tell them to get to work! You can provide a small basket somewhere at the reception for them to place them in and put it away until you have the chance to piece everything together. Depending on the type and thickness of your paper choice, you can furl and fray the edges of your paper on the top and bottom before pasting it into your scrapbook area thus creating miniature scrolls. For a simpler option, do a set of 'his' and 'hers' Thanksgiving poems—being sure to include thankfulness for each other, of course!

Thanksgiving poems are a fun and unique way to bring a little character to the Thanksgiving area of your scrapbooks. A few verses can add a lot of flavor to your holiday scrapbook serving!

Technology has changed so much of the way we live. Computers and the internet have especially produced very significant impacts on the way we do different stuff. It made us change the way we do business. The internet revolutionized the way we study. These technologies definitely revolutionized the way we access information. The internet changed the way we build social circles. Last, but definitely not the least, the internet changed the way we look at entertainment.

Some people may disagree, but the internet is definitely the best idea since sliced bread. The internet makes humanity capable of so many things that today, imagination is the only limit. Just think of how come we have far in so few years. A decade ago, the cellular phone was a pathetically large device, which allowed you to call other people, and could not do much else. Now, we have cellular phones that allow you to check your mail, shop, take and share videos and photographs, and virtually any other activity imaginable. Surely, this is a great evidence of the accelerating technological evolution.

There was a time when what you needed to create a scrapbook were paper, scissors, memorabilia, pictures, pens, coloring material and lots of glue. A good idea, of course, was essential to making a good scrapbook. You needed to take time to form a scrapbook out of the little bits and pieces you had. Creativity was a must in order to create the perfect scrapbook.

The advent of the internet also changed that. Today, there are downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking in the internet. This new technology has a few advantages and disadvantages. Let's take a look at them, shall we?

Advantages:

1) It saves time and effort – Downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking save time. This is because with downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking, you do not need to take a long time to think up ideas or a general theme for your scrapbook.

There is also the issue of effort. Making a scrapbook from scratch often needs dedication. You need to put in the effort to create a thing of beauty. However, most people today do not have the energy to expend on scrapbooking.

With downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking, you only need to choose which style you want and voila! You have a scrapbook. Many people choose this because of the fact that the world we live in today doesn't really allow us to have much free time. We need to put in the hours to earn money and survive.

2) Easy to share – most downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking in the internet today allow you to share the scrapbook you made to the whole world. You see, most downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking actually need you to upload the images and photos in the internet and there create a virtual scrapbook.

Of course this can't really compare to holding a scrapbook you made with your own hands. However, for those who want instant connectivity, then downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking are perfect for you.

Disadvantages:

1) Uniformity – with downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking, you get to choose from a lot of designs. Because of this feature, however, your scrapbook will lack the individuality that truly makes scrapbooks beautiful. You see, a scrapbook has to reflect your personality. The fact that you make scrapbooks from scratch guarantees that your scrapbook will be unique in the world.

2) Limited to photos – you see, you cannot really upload pieces of memorabilia in order to put into an online scrapbook. We all know that the best scrapbooks use a mixture of pictures and memorabilia in order to truly capture a special event in our lives. We don't really carry a camera around all the time (but nowadays, because of cell phone cameras, some of us do). There are just some experiences, which cannot be fully expressed by a photograph.

There you go: those are some pros and cons of using downloadable albums for free photo scrapbooking. You need to realize that whatever other people tell you about how a scrapbook should look like and how you should create one, the final look of the scrapbook should always reflect your personality. A scrapbook talks about your life, thus, no one can really judge what it should look like, except you.

Scrapbooking in the 21st Century means having access to an almost unlimited variety of albums, pages, backgrounds, colors, fonts, writing implements, embellishments, and technology. Chances are you've probably obtained at least some of your supplies from the Internet.

A Change from the Internet

Scrapbooking is a craft that involves texture and color. The best way to experience those sensual aspects is visiting a scrapbooking store. Shopping in the store allows you to pick up and touch the items versus just viewing them on your computer. It means holding the most tempting embellishments next to pages and papers to compare the details of color and texture. It means searching by strolling the aisles, which sometimes results in finding something you never knew existed. That kind of shopping is difficult on the Internet where you need to know what you want before you can find it.

Even better is the human contact you'll find at your scrapbooking store. There are knowledgeable salespeople who can answer questions and other scrapbookers who can share experiences and swap stories with you. If your store doesn't host a club or offer classes, speak to a manager. A scrapbooking store is a localized community, and face-to-face communication is more fun compared to e-mail and discussion forums.

The Heritage Album

You may prefer the convenience of ordering materials, but nothing beats a scrapbooking store when you're trying a new kind of project. Let's take a heritage album as an example.

The heritage album focuses on family history, and obviously, you can't fit your entire family history in a single album, so focus on a theme. You can build an album around an era or only the women or men or the family who served in the military or perhaps a family business. But before you begin, take that stroll through the scrapbooking store.

There are special lines of scrapbooking materials made for heritage albums. Look at the page protectors for those valuable photos. Sepia and black and white photos will need special background colors; avoid the extremes and go for soft tones. But with the variety of tones in the old photos, you should hold them against the papers you're considering. What works for one picture may be awful for another.

Color can help tell the story, too. A black and white picture of the family can look great by using turquoise for the background. Your old Chevy might need a turquoise background and a pattern that looks like wallpaper from the 50s helps tell another story. Embellishments that reflect the style of an era will really dress the page up.

The point is that you can find many things in a scrapbooking store that you won't find online. The best thing you'll find is inspiration.

When it comes to scrapbooking, everyone has their own approach to the craft. The possibilities are endless, and many different kinds of scrapbooking are very popular including memory scrapbooking, and magazine scrapbooking. With coming up with ideas for magazine scrapbooking, it's important to remember the options you have available to you.

Not only are there a ton of different magazines to choose from when obtaining and creating magazine scrapbooking material, but there are also off beat options. These options can include actually creating your own magazine by scrapbooking it together, using different paraphernalia from family pictures or even your favorite movies. In the end, it all comes down to preference.

Putting it All Together

When thinking about how to put together a magazine scrapbooking project, a simple book of easily manageable pages may come to mind. But to make a project that impresses everyone and sets your work apart from many other magazine scrapbooking projects, think outside the box.

Using homemade cardboard pages sewn together in a fashion that is durable yet pleasant looking to the eye is a great way to show off your favorite magazine clips or make a special magazine scrapbooking project that isn't necessarily made from scrapbooking materials but instead made to look like a magazine page.

If you plan on going the route of making a scrapbooking project look like a magazine, writing small clips and captions to accompany your scraps of memorabilia is essential in creating the right magazine tone. Memorabilia is only one angle to go with a magazine scrapbooking project, as creating a magazine of sorts through your scrapbooking project about things like your favorite subject or event in the world are different routes to take.

Where to Find Content

When you are on the lookout for great content in regard to creating that special magazine scrapbooking project, think about checking out magazines you may not have had an interest in during the past. While in line at the grocery or drug store, glance through the available magazines and see what there is to offer! After all, just because you don't read the Oprah magazine doesn't mean the current issue on the shelf doesn't offer something you can use for your project.

Another route to take is using tabloid magazines. Everyone loves gossip, and creating a magazine that highlights a lot of the public interest pieces found in a tabloid magazine is sure to be a hit among friends and family. No matter the edge you decide to take when creating your magazine scrapbooking project, let your creativity shine and everyone is sure to love it.

In times where one needs focus, it goes without even saying that establishing a comfortable working space is more than just important, it is essential in keeping the balance between frustration and contentment. That is why investing in a scrapbooking desk can ensure that you never feel the frustrations of having all your scrapbooking stuff lying around in all the different places. What a scrapbooking desk does is offer you the required space so that you can compile your memories for as long as you wish.

There are many models to choose from, and sometimes it doesn't even mean that you have to go out and buy a new scrapbooking desk. What you can do is invest in the time of using an old desk and making it useful to your scrapbooking needs.

How to Make a Versatile Scrapbooking Desk

There are few rules to remember when embarking on the wondrous adventures of working on a scrapbook. The most important thing is that scrapbooking is meant to be fun, and you are the only one that can preserve the memories the way that you choose. Then comes the creativity, where you make the scrapbook as creative as you choose it to be.

What you need to make your scrapbooking desk is, naturally, a nice, comfortable table and place tucked away in a comfortable space. Then you need to have your little storing spaces, which come in the form of shelves or tiny storage boxes. Label these according to your needs, and they need to be glued onto your desk, so you can have some of your storage boxes labelled pictures, paint, stickers, pencils and all of your other supplies.

This will help you get to work in a systematic order, but it will also depend on the type pf person you are. By making your own scrapbooking desk you will ensure that the memory preserving process goes according to your own wishes. Do not think that you have to work on a system that is based on ones own idea; instead, create your own scrapbooking desk so that you work at your pace and at your own comfort level.

Other Options For a Scrapbooking Desk

If you feel that you are more comfortable with the buying a scrapbooking desk, then you can do so. You will need to research the type of desk that will best fit with your needs and space. There are many websites available that will open this option for you, and you do not even have to leave your home to purchase your scrapbooking desk.

Often the reason that people find it hard to start with their scrapbooking is the enormity of the task at hand. This can be very daunting, and thus leading to yet another unfulfilled task that plagues the mind and gnaws at the soul.

However, what most beginners, or would-be-beginners, learning to scrapbook need to remember is that everything is done one step at a time. There are many scrapbooking for beginners resources that are available at the click of a button, so all excuses aside it can be, and has been, done before. The scrapbooking for beginners tutorials help make a mole-hill out of what would have otherwise been a mountain that could be standing in the way of your scrapbooking success.

Scrapbooking for Beginners Guide to the Galaxy of Scrapbooking

Imagine how many items that we use without consideration on an everyday basis would not have been invented had obstacles been allowed to conquer the will! It is the same philosophy that applies to scrapbooking, but you are not alone in your scrapbooking quest. There are many forums that are dedicated to acting as a scrapbooking for beginners guide. In these scrapbooking forums you can find the motivation that you need to actually put theory into practice.

The Interesting Scrapbooking for Beginners Rule!

The basic rule in scrapbooking for beginners is that there is never the feeling of 'too late.' You can always start scrapbooking anytime, and once you have made that commitment, you need to see it through at you own pace. But see it through you must, in order to experience the full momentum of the emotions. Never leave a scrapbooking project unfinished – this scrapbooking for beginners guide or guideline rule is said often, because you can easily lose your momentum and stop, only to later find it hard to return. This can result in a series of unfinished projects, which will leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

Don't be deterred by the work that is required, it is the journey that matters and the quick getting there. Scrapbooking is like taking a long train ride through your life, enjoying the scenery, and taking a snapshot here and there as you go along. There is much to be learned as a beginner, and if you are really enthusiastic about taking this journey then you should not neglect the scrapbooking for beginners advice that you will get along the way.

Have you ever tried scrapbooking? In truth, a lot of people are so much hooked into scrapbooking that they literally spend hours and hours of conceptualizing the design which they think will be the best for their work of art. Of course, they spend money on this scrapbook venture too.

The basic problem which many scrapbookers face is that they tend to have an overflow of ideas right on the first page that they eat up too much time on it. But then this is not something to get disappointed with since the finished product will always be worth it.

Why waste time for scrapbooking? What can you actually get from it? As everybody knows, scrapbooking is one avenue of keeping memories alive and continuously fresh. It has been everybody's custom to take photos of every single important occasion in their lives whether they may be in the past, present, or in the future. Why just stick them in plain-looking photo albums when in fact you can add some artistic and personal touch to them?

The real score in scrapbooking is not really to include all those photos you've taken. It is all about choosing some pieces that best stand as the representations of the certain occasion. Remember that scrapbooking balances the role of the photos plus the chosen layout for all those photos. Frankly speaking, the design of your choice will aid in telling the real story behind the concept more than those pictures will do.

When you had never tried scrapbooking but you are actually craving for that experience, you can watch other people do it so you will be able to grasp some essential ideas. You can likewise take the opportunity of attending classes. Yes, there are classes especially held for the benefit of the budding scrapbookers.

There are certainly a lot of local arts and crafts shops that conduct classes for individuals of all levels. You may opt whether or not to buy your supplies there. Likewise, several community colleges make such classes available also for outsiders.

These courses can really be of great help for the beginners in the world of scrapbooking. For a minimal fee, all supplies are included and you can start enjoying the experience.

Some classes will already provide you with the ready-made scrapbooks while there are those that will require you to bring your personally-owned scrapbooks. But of course, you've got to bring your very own pictures! For sure you can't wait how your scrapbook frames will look like in the end.

A Warning for all Scrapbookers

When choosing a scrapbooking frame, you should be cautious. There is a wide array of choices of scrapbooking frames made available in arts and crafts shops. Scrapbooking frames vary in styles and designs so you've got to bear these things in your mind.

Also take note of the theme which you need to employ in your scrapbook frames. Scrapbook frames come in a variety of themes such as the Halloween, Christmas, baptism, and so on. But of course there are some traditional scrapbooking arts stores that can provide you with cheaper alternatives so that you will be able to save a lot of money.

Some Scrapbooking Secrets to Remember

When scrapbooking is what you wish to do, always never fail to conduct research. Always look for little things which can be employed in your scrapbook frames such as trinkets, ribbons, stickers, and many more. Where should you conduct your research? Take a tour from among the arts and crafts shops in your area. Also never forget to browse through the internet as it is a deep well of information. Online shopping has never been boring. Via the internet, you'll grasp the essential and the hottest materials in scrapbooking. Scrapbooking frames are nonetheless all available online.

Scrapbooks as Gifts

1) Environmental – These scrapbooking templates incorporate the design of nature in their theme. These templates often include motifs of plants and animals and are designed to showcase the natural beauty of the earth. This type of scrapbooking template is ideal when you are planning to use nature-oriented materials in your scrapbook. This scrapbooking template can be useful if you are planning to include that pebble you brought home as a memory of a walk in the beach, that piece of leaf that serves as a reminder of a very eventful autumn day, and any other organic materials.

This scrapbooking template may also prove valuable when you are trying to put together a scrapbook of different types of "nature trips" such as hiking activities and jungle safaris.

2) Technological – You could also go with a technological scrapbooking template and try to showcase the distance which civilization has come. Technological scrapbooking themes incorporate images you associate with technology. This includes (but is not limited to): computers, microchips, cellular phones, vehicles, gadgets and all other types of symbols used in the world of technology today.

By using technological scrapbooking templates, you actually show to the people how up to date you are on the modern world. You also show a certain mindset that comes with being techno-savvy. By using this type of scrapbooking template, you show that you are open to the evolution of civilization and that your mind can take new ideas. For, in essence, that's what technology is all about.

3) Sports – Probably one of the most popular types of scrapbooking templates, sports are more often chosen by men to be the overall theme for a scrapbook. This may be because of their upbringing or it may be just because of the fact that it is what society expects them to choose. Sports scrapbooking templates can be divided into three categories:

a) Persona – This type of scrapbooking template showcases different sports personalities and are most often chosen by avid fans. By using this scrapbooking template you actually show your support for a certain player, no matter what current team he or she is playing for. This is also popular for those who follow individual sports, as these sports tend to make celebrities out of the different players.

b) Team – This type of scrapbooking template can be based on a team symbol or team ideal. Images of different team members are also sometimes used in the different pages of the scrapbook. Sometimes, this type of team scrapbooking template is used to signify the unity of a single group. More often, though, this type of scrapbooking template is used to show support for a team or an institution.

This type of scrapbooking template is often supported by alumni of certain schools or residents of certain states.

c) Equipment – This type of sports scrapbooking template showcases the different types of equipment used in a game. This actually is used to signify the virtues of the game as a whole. Whatever game the maker favors can be portrayed using the different equipment used in that game.

Another option is to use different types of equipment to signify sports as a whole. This showcases the athleticism of a scrapbook enthusiast and shows his or her passion for any sport.

4) Emotions – There are actually different scrapbooking templates that use emotion as a base. These templates often signify the chosen emotion through different manners. Here are some of them:

a) Colors – The brightness and darkness of the hues used sometimes show the emotion within the scrapbooking template. If you observe, we sometimes associate different emotions with different colors. Some scrapbooking templates take this further by separating each color into shades and showing the intensity of the emotion vary with the shade.

b) Characters – Different characters are also used to portray different types of emotions. Some characters may be shown with facial expressions that transmit the different emotions. They can also be shown doing different activities, depending on the mood of the scrapbook. Background drawings can also be used to try and reflect on the character what the person is feeling. A rain, for example, can show sorrow or sadness.

Since time immemorial scrapbooks are created out of papers-the most versatile material one could use in many ways. Truth is, scrapbooks are not possible without them. Every print from old to modern age has been built around exploiting the use of paper. Needless to say, paper scrapbooking still evolves today.

No matter how complicated the process of scrapbooks turn out, papers are out of question as main material. Stores now offer pre-maid paper, which can be bought and compiled based on personal taste. But is this satisfactory enough?

Making use of recycled paper for scrapbooking:

Sentimental scrapbook collectors are not always satisfied by commercially available layouts found in stores. They would still prefer doing their own cut out from old magazines for a treasure surprise they can by combining different images they prefer. This is not all about saving money but it is all about making use of art talent and skill. Yes, scrapbooking is also an art in itself.

PAPER SOURCES

There are different kinds of papers used by magazine publishers. Usually vogue images are printed in sturdy, glossy pages. It takes an eye to spot good magazines fit for use in scrapbooking. Sometimes you will not know how priceless piles of magazines can do for an effective scrapbook. If you are collecting stuff for serious scrapbooking, there has to be different photography on them.

Do not stick on just specific publishing, but rather, collect various kinds with different colors, motifs and articles accompanying good shots. Expensive magazines are more likely qualified to suit your needs. Be wary in throwing them away. If you don't want to file too much bulk in storages, you can cut out pictures at once and throw away or sell the unused old pages to junk paper buyers.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN LAYOUT

If you have a hardbound scrapbook, you can at once assemble your layout. You can plan it beforehand by starting with the theme played on a specific color scheme.

Remember the proper elements of good design. It takes understanding the color wheel to know what it takes in having the confidence of combining colors. A good tip is to look at different fabrics.

Choose a favorite one and try to apply it to your scrapbook theme. Fabrics had been pre-designed by manufacturers before releasing them to the market. It means the colors are already in the right combination. This could inspire you and help you in case you do not have the flair with colors. Consider repetition of patterns, rhythm, harmony and sense of emphasis.

MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION

How long do you want to preserve the scrapbook? Papers last long, but it will depend on its make. There are papers that can attract specific insects and do different changes to the scrapbook pages. If you can stretch out a budget, it is best to keep pages covered by plastic bounds.

Several kinds are available commercially, which you can buy even during the pre-design stage planning. Use synthetic glues and not those made out of organic materials. Keep the scrapbook in a box or drawer free from dusts and make sure not to expose it to moist and damp places. If brought outdoors, do not expose for long to sunlight. Keep it away from children's reach.

Paper scrapbooking is a very rewarding hobby. If you make good ones, you can even give it away as a gift to a loved one. It will be appreciated more!
